11 June 2021

twitter: @eugenio_fouz

Piccadilly Circus, London

A double-check of a good work in the ic will assess their learning of English language. The students have been showing their notebooks with exercises done. In this test the teacher could check- double-check, in fact- their knowledge.

As a teacher using @moodle I am trying these days to provide students some temporary files (exercises and texts).

Not all students attending classes online pay attention to the recommendations of teachers, so I have prepared some extra activities which will be open (seen) for a certain time only. These are called THE GUADIANA FILES. I mark them with three asterisks (***).

E.g:

The Guadiana Files 1.1

1.Pass to the negative:
a. My name is Peter Smith
b. I can speak four foreign languages
c. Tom and Mark are my friends
d. The teacher will write some exercises on the board
e. Sit down there, please!

2.Write these numbers in words. (2.two)
8. 12. 15. 20. 31. 40. 103.

3.Make a list of your favourite things (e.g. cell phone) (minimum 5 things)

4.Answer to these questions: (use a minimum of 3 words)
a. What is your surname?
b. How are you?
c. What is your favourite TV programme?
d. Do you like this subject?
e. Why?

How to get ready for the next examination of English language

30 November 2020

twitter: @eugenio_fouz

How to get ready for the next examination of English Language

Some suggestions

1/ download and print on paper: Parallel Papers & Words

2/ try to learn skeleton of verbs [PPA, first pages], but not all of them

3/ revise and study vocabulary from every lesson [WORDS]
-use a highlighter / ball pen to underline those words you know-

4/ have a bird´s eye view of the things you need to learn: BOOK, notebook, MOODLE texts, practice, documents

5/ use a dictionary

6/ get used to reading: messages, news, texts

How do I get used to reading?
Every single day, if I get free time, no matter where I am, subway, public road, home, school, company. I will read something in English. And I have downloaded many English reading apps and News apps, even read interesting answers in Quora.

After step by step, I get quite familiar with the vocabularies, even though there are thousands of words I am struggled with, but I don’t feel uncomfortable anymore.

Now, I keep the same habit as routine, and every day I read at least 30 pages in an English textbook and freestyle reading during the rest of the time.

Finally, I have to say, there is no shortcut, not at all. Only master it through reading, reading, and reading“. (Erasmus Yan. July 13, 2018.-QUORA)

You can only get used to reading by reading. Try starting with short books and light material, then gradually move on to longer and denser subjects. Since I have attention deficit problems, I couldn’t read for more than 10 minutes straight a year ago. Now I’m used to it and regularly read in 3–4 hour bursts and occasionally as much as 15 hours a day if I happen to get my hands on something I’m passionate about. I would recommend easing your way in with lighter material.” (Andrew Holmes. July 15, 2018. QUORA)

7/ get used to listening English talk (audios, TV series, short videos)

8/ distinguish THEORY from PRACTICE. Learn the concepts you must learn by heart. See which of the parts of theory are BASICS, e.g: cardinal numbers, how to tell the time, etcetera

Hi, pupil!

Maybe you can find this note interesting for you.

Hola, buenos días. Soy su profesor. Tengo la sensación de que aún no ha empezado a tomarse en serio las clases. Me dispongo a guiarle con unas recomendaciones bienintencionadas.

Vamos a ir despacito.

Reminder: 7 tips and recommendations + EXTRA: TOEFL listening

30 October 2020

twitter: @eugenio_fouz

Reminder: 7 tips for the newcomers

1/ have a look at Hoja del Alumno

2/ get student´s material ready: book, dictionary, bloc or notebook, pens and photocopies (Parallel Papers pack, WORDS). A cell phone may be useful only occasionally

3/ it is a good idea to get these copies printed on paper: WORDS and Parallel Papers -PPA-

4/ visit Aula Virtual -AV / @moodle- very often

5/ see the structure of Aula Virtual: urgent section / lessons / information / miscellaneous / focus on diversity

The 3 elements in every lesson:
a-contenidos (theory)
b-recursos complementarios (practice)
c-tareas (practice and homework)

Click on the links (enlaces), the videos, audios, vocabulary and grammar syllabus, reading, oral assessment, notebook, WORDS, advice, GIFs, practice, MESSAGE, etcetera

6/ read BOARD class papers (usually PDF, portable document format) to see what we have done in previous classes: examples, grammar, words, tasks

7/ learn about the rules on attending classes from home: connect your web cam, turn off your microphone (turn the microphone on for speaking only). There are two shifts: be in the real classroom at school or stay in the classroom online. Respect this!
