The Best Times to Walk, Depending on Your Goals
Jessica Migala APRIL 19, 2019

‘Starting a consistent walking routine is the first step toward improving your health. But maybe you’re ready to take it up a notch and squeeze out the biggest benefits from every stroll. Research is finding that when you walk matters in relation to specific health goals.

Whether you’re looking to lower your blood pressure, boost your happiness or find a remedy for insomnia, there’s a right time to walk based on your goal:

In new research in the journal Medicine & Science in Sports & Exercise, people who had hypertension performed moderate-intensity exercise for 45 minutes three times a week for 10 weeks either in the morning or evening. Those who exercised between 6–8 p.m. saw an 8-point drop in systolic blood pressure, on average, compared to controls, while morning exercisers experienced a 5-point drop.

So the next time you’re tempted to switch on the TV after dinner, go for a stroll around your neighborhood instead.’

Walk this way… and lose 10lb in four weeks! How simply putting one foot in front of the other can beat the bulge
Sports scientist Joanna Hall teaches a way to walk that aligns the body
The technique can help alleviate back pain and help shed the excess pounds

‘Next time you are out on a busy street, look around you. There will, no doubt, be people walking and going about their daily business. So far, so ordinary.

But stop for a moment to really watch. Hunched over, shoulders tense, arms unmoving, heads often bowed – the simple act of movement seems a struggle for many.

And that is because they are not walking correctly. I admit it sounds ludicrous – starting to walk is a milestone most of us pass shortly after our eighth month of life, usually with the help of our parents. But, typically, bar a little self-taught fine-tuning, there ends the lesson.’

How to Burn Calories with a Power Walk

Samantha Clayton, AFAA, ISSA –

‘If you enjoy walking as part of your fitness routine, then try a power walk to challenge yourself. You can add in some of my favorite toning exercises while you power walk and get a perfect cardio-boosting workout that will help you to burn extra calories, while toning up your legs, arms and abs.

What is a power walk?
A power walk is when you are walking very fast—to the point where you are almost jogging—but instead maintain a fast walking pace.

Why choose a power walk over a running routine?
You might wonder why you should maintain a power walk speed instead of just breaking into a light jog. One reason is because this is a walking workout and not a jogging workout! On a more serious note, people who are new to fitness might not be ready to start jogging right away, which makes power walking a good choice for a cardio workout. I believe in taking exercise one step at a time, and walking is simply one step before jogging.

If you’re already an avid exerciser or runner, adding a power walk to your current routine may be a great way to ensure that you are performing a good variety of exercise styles. Power walking would also be a great choice as a rest day routine.

For those that are concerned about doing high-impact moves because of previous injuries, recent pregnancy or excess body fat, power walking is a great alternative to running or jogging.’

Phone Etiquette Tips – 11 Things You Should Never Say

Canity.-

‘Just because you reckon you could talk the hind legs off a donkey, doesn’t make you a strong professional communicator on the phone.

If you work in an office setting and use the telephone to chat to customers, (yes – we also wish you could just use emojis) then you ought to run through these 11 phone no-no’s.

1. “How are you?”

“How are you?” “Good.” [Awkward pause.] “And you?” “Yeah – good too.” “That’s good.” [Awkward pause #2.]

You don’t really care how the customer is doing and, to be frank, the sentiment is mutual. Don’t waste your customer’s time by enquiring absent-mindedly as to their wellbeing. Cut straight to the point!

2. “Mate!”

Customers are not your mates. Here in Australia, we assume the word ‘mate’ does to conversation what tomato sauce does to food – makes it all better! But in actual fact, it’s unprofessional and is likely to confound rather than amuse your customer.

3. Crutch Words

“There are, like, four different sizes, and each size is available in, like, a million different colours…”

“Like” is a crutch word and crutch words just have no place in conversation. “Like”,
and its over- and inappropriately used crutch-cousins, come off as unpolished and a little juvenile. Cut it out and your phone etiquette will improve like crazy.’

Cotton Farmer

A farmer from the cotton fields of Central Texas dies and goes to hell. Why? Well, only his wife, God and the Devil knows!

Once there, the Devil notices that this farmer is not suffering like the rest there are. He checks his gauges and sees that it’s 95 degrees and about 80% humidity.

So he goes to the farmer and asks why he’s so happy. The farmer replies “I like it here. It’s just like plowing my fields in June.”

Unhappy with the farmer’s response, the devil goes back to his controls and turns the temperature up to 105 degrees and 90% humidity. After making the adjustment, the devil goes looking for the farmer. Finding him just as happy as can be, the Devil is very frustrated and asks the farmer again why he’s so happy.

“This is even beter now! It’s like pulling weeds in the fields during July!” says the farmer.

The Devil, now quite upset and deciding to make the farmer really suffer, returns to his controls and cranks the heat up to 115 degrees and the humidity to 100%. “Now we’ll see if that farmer is smiling!” he thinks as he goes looking for the farmer again. But he found him sitting on the ground, happy as ever. Now the Devil is madder than before.

When he asks the farmer why he’s happy now, the farmer answers, “This is great, it’s just like driving the picker in August!”

That was enough for the Devil. Running back to his controls, he turns the temperature down to a freezing 10 degrees below zero.

Within a matter of minutes, the pools of molten brimstone begin to ice over. “Let’s see what what farmer has to say about this,” snickers the Devil to himself.

To his surprise, the Devil returns to find the farmer running around and jumping for joy, yelling at the top of his lungs: “The Cowboys won the SuperBowl! I can’t believe it! The Cowboys won the Super Bowl!”

Five writing books every journalist should own

RICK NAGEL

COLUMNS
5 Writing Books Every Journalist Should Own
May 8, 2018
BY RICK NAGEL, Parts Unknown

“Just last month, a young journalist asked me for some tips on how to be a better writer.
“Read a lot, write a lot,” I said, almost instantly — advice lifted word-for-word from Stephen King’s book, “On Writing.”

Now, before you snort derisively or make a nasty finger gesture at the NINA emblem on your screen, let me say this: Even if you DON’T LIKE Stephen King, if have any interest at all in putting sentences together that other people might lay eyes on, by God, you should read this book.

In fact, “On Writing” is one of and handful of books I think every journalist should have on his or her bookshelf, tablet or e-reader.”
