‘The recent photograph of JK Rowling on a terrace, holding an alcoholic drink and smoking a cigar to celebrate the UK Supreme Court’s ruling linking the definition of a woman to biological sex, is a symbol of an era. Comparable to the photograph of the “Suffragists at the Washington March” (1913), the “Chained Suffragettes of the Social and Political Union,” Howard Miller’s “We Can Do It” poster (1943), or the “Bra Burning at Miss America” (1968). The legal definition established by the Supreme Court has bolstered a feminism threatened at its core by movements that, with a mix of relativism and magical realism, have attempted to blur the boundaries of femininity, reducing the female condition to a lifestyle akin to nudism, veganism, or Kabbalah.
Just as public institutions like government or marriage can adapt to the societies that created them, generating tensions that ultimately lead to change and historical progress, biological facts like sex or age are not malleable concepts that allow such flexibility without causing irreversible ruptures and setbacks. In the future, if technology renders sex or age no longer identifiable categories, perhaps then the terms “man” and “woman,” like “old” and “young,” will be perfectly interchangeable and deemed insignificant. But is that a desirable scenario? Has sexual divergence been and continues to be a source of richness worth preserving? JK Rowling seems to believe so, which is why she poses radiantly in response to the semantic ruling issued by the courts.
In a world where certain sectors of the left seem to advocate for special status for every identity, even those that have proven extremely harmful to humanity, it is paradoxical that these same sectors have promoted the dissolution of female identity, reducing it to a mere opinion. ‘
