GEORGE STEINER

‘Rain, particularly to a child, carries distinct smells and
colors. Summer rains in the Tyrol are relentless. They have a
morose, flogging insistence and come in deepening shades of dark
green. At night, the drumming is one ofmice on or just under the
roof. Even daylight can be sodden. But it is the smell which, after
sixty years, stays with me. Of drenched leather and hung game.
Or, at moments, oftubers steaming under drowned mud. A world
made boiled cabbage.’

‘Is it legal for teachers to lower grades based on behavior? My Spanish teacher has a category in her gradebook called “Rules and expectations” (I live in Oklahoma).

QUORA

I don’t know if it’s legal in Oklahoma.

Lori L.-I teach in Colorado. I’m not going to second-guess another teacher about how she manages her classroom. I will tell you that, in my first career as a teacher, I taught secondary English/Language Arts.

Even though most students in an English class already speak English, the reason that we teach it is that students still need to learn to be better readers, writers, speakers, and listeners. You and your classmates can’t learn what you need to learn unless every student either participates — or (at least) doesn’t make it impossible for others to participate.

By the time that you’re old enough to be in a Spanish class, you ought to be able to behave appropriately. It’s pretty juvenile and pretty selfish to waste everybody else’s time — just so that you can get a little (negative) attention. The teacher is still responsible for teaching all the material, and your classmates (and you) are still responsible for learning it.

What? Do you think that the test is going to change because you won’t let the teacher teach or let the other students learn some of the things on the test? Yeah, news flash: The curriculum doesn’t revolve around you.

Your Spanish teacher shouldn’t have to make behavior part of your grade.

Carrie J.-That probably depends on the policy for your school district. Some school districts expect students to behave and don’t have a problem with lowering their grades if students don’t meet the teacher’s expectations. Other school districts look the other way where behavior is concerned and feel that if a student can act like a jerk in class and still do well on their assignments then the teacher should allow that. Usually, however, students who are behavior problems are not paying attention when the teacher gives instructions. They often miss significant details. They turn in their work late. They frequently come to class unprepared. Does this sound like someone that might resemble the student you had in mind?

This decision by teachers to include aspects of student behavior in a grade that…

Jeff M.- This decision by teachers to include aspects of student behavior in a grade that should clearly be indicative of a student’s academic performance drives me crazy, both as a teacher and a parent. The whole point of a grade is to communicate how well a student is meeting the academic expectations of the class. Once you start including other aspects into the calculation of the grade, you diminish the effectiveness of the grade.

I get that some of these attributes — coming prepared to class, paying attention, regularly doing your homework, working well both independently and in groups, following agreed upon rules — are important and in a lot of cases are directly correlated to a better understanding of content. But including them in an academic grade is bad practice.

A solution is to assess some of these attributes separately from academic performance. I’d love to hear comments.

Did your teacher announce beforehand behavior was part of your class grade?

Mark F. -If so, you knew this criteria. If not, then I think you have a beef. Then, it appears arbitrary. I have a class participatiom rubric I use which I give to students at the beginning of the term and spend 15 minutes talking about it.’

Hello,” Life says, “Remember me?
We started out together here
When you were just a bundle
Of innocent amazement.
Remember how you saw the world
With nothing but wonder?
We were such rowdy playmates then.
We painted on the sky with clouds
And made magic out of
Clothespins and peanut butter.
Remember, can you, how I became stained and heavy
With trouble?
Not safe now. Lots of no.
They dressed me in painful clothes
And made you wear them, too.
You don’t recognize me, do you
But I’ve never abandoned you
Or lost my wild, happy desire
To show you
Play with you
Kiss you
Hide and seek down twisty paths
And always discover more.
Want to run away with me again?
Shall we elope without ever leaving
Because that’s possible, you know.
I’ve never been anywhere but here
Waiting for you
To remember.”
