Three folded gifts in 7 favourite websites

29 July 2019

twitter: @eugenio_fouz

Some webs have the three-folded gift of offering the platform, a profile and an element extra. Let us see, for example LinkedIn. This web provides tools for a professional profile, the forum to share information or whatever and contact other people with the same interests as you. The point number three can be the SlideShare page. This happens with 43marks , tumblr & blogger, too.

Something similar happens with Twitter (profile, live contact through tweets and links), gmail (google site -profile-, electronic mail and a safe box called Google Drive) and WordPress for blogging (gravatar -profile-, the wonderful blog site and plenty of links)

7 musts in the learning of a foreign language

27 July 2019

twitter: @eugenio_fouz

Which are the things you should learn in a foreign language?

First, I think I should learn the alphabet and vocabulary, that is to say, words from the new language and of course, their meanings. I should know how to say every word, how to pronounce them. This part has to do with phonetics. Whenever I learn a new word I feel the urgency to know how to write it (spelling, written language)

Second, grammar. What are the rules in that language. Why do we say or write “I do not like her” instead of saying  **“”I not like her”, for example. Being able to create my own messages following the rules of grammar. These rules include exceptions.

Third, I would like to learn functional language as well, I mean, practical and formulaic sentences to ask someone his name or his age as in “What is your name?” or “How old are you?”. There are plenty of singular expressions which belong to formulaic language such as idioms, slang, abbreviations or false friends, among many others.

Fourth, I would appreciate to know about syntax (order and relationships of elements in the discourse).

Fifth, I´d love to be an independent reader of literature and a good radio listener as well to work fluency in the foreign language besides the pleasure of reading inherent to a man of letters like me.

Sixth, being curious about culture (tradition, customs, people, geography, etcetera)

Seventh, practise language through the well-know four basic skills: reading, listening, writing, reading

  2. How to manage your money. Pay with cash and live within your means.
  3. Don’t starve for a pair of jeans.
  4. Save enough cash to get home in a cab.
  5. Getting good grades alone won’t get you that job

  1. Don’t intern in a very small company and expect a huge outcome.
  2. Work for cash as a waitress.
  3. Remember your roots.Don’t leave your old high school friends in the dust.
  4. Foster relationships with your teachers and older students. Networking.
  5. Be professional in order to be taken seriously.

  1. Watch what you post on social media. They look, they really look.
  2. Network while you’re out.
  3. Learn how to collaborate.
  4. Take your assignments seriously.
  5. Don’t take yourself too seriously. College is a time to experiment.

  1. Travel as much as you can. Embrace your lack of commitments
  2. Work during the summer.
  3. Accept that you will need to get a job and grow up after graduation.
  4. Don’t take time off unless it’s an emergency.
  5. Finish.

  1. Allow yourself to be passionate.
  2. Don’t do drugs.
  3. Start a blog.
  4. Don’t spread yourself too thin. Put quality over quantity.
  5. Don’t get a pet. Remember this is about you, not saving a dog.

  1. Go home for holidays. Family is forever.
  2. Don’t buy something you’re going to owe payments on.

“Wolframio” (Íñigo Domínguez)

22 July 2019

twitter: @eugenio_fouz

“The day of his death was a dark cold day” (W. H. Auden)

23 June 2019

twitter: @eugenio_fouz

W. H. Auden, poet

In Memory of W.B. Yeats

“He disappeared in the dead of winter:

The brooks were frozen, the airports almost deserted,

And snow disfigured the public statues;

The mercury sank in the mouth of the dying day.

What instruments we have agree

The day of his death was a dark cold day.

Far from his illness

The wolves ran on through the evergreen forests,

The peasant river was untempted by the fashionable quays;

By mourning tongues

The death of the poet was kept from his poems.”
